Read the upload instructions first
A photo can look fine on screen and still be rejected by an online form. The reason is often a mismatch between the requested file format, pixel dimensions and file size. Before editing, write down these three requirements from the receiving website. Also check whether it specifies a background, face position or a recent photo. Our tools prepare files; they do not decide whether an application will accept them.
Pixels and KB measure different things
Pixel dimensions describe how many dots make up an image, such as 600 × 600 pixels. File size describes how much storage the encoded file uses, such as 150 KB. Two images with identical pixel dimensions can have different file sizes because the detail and compression differ. Changing one does not guarantee a particular value for the other.
Start from the clearest original
Use an original image if you have one. A screenshot of a screenshot, or a photo that has already been heavily compressed, may have rough edges and blurred text. Enlarging that file adds pixels but does not restore the missing detail. Keep a separate original so you can start again without repeated quality loss.
Choose a fit method deliberately
Open Resize image, enter the required width and height and select a fit method. Keeping the whole image adds padding when its proportions do not match the new dimensions. Filling the size crops the edges from the center. For a face or signature, inspect the output carefully to make sure nothing important has been cut off. If the form forbids padding, begin with a correctly framed original.
Reduce file size in small steps
Once the dimensions are correct, open Compress image. Begin with a moderate quality setting, process the image and compare the resulting size with the upload limit. Lower the setting if needed. Check the preview for blocky skin tones, broken lettering or unclear edges. For a strict size limit, leave a little room below the maximum rather than aiming at the last byte.
Check the final download
- Confirm the saved file is in the accepted format, such as JPG or PNG.
- Check its dimensions and file size in the file properties or an image viewer.
- Open it at normal size and inspect the edges, face or signature.
- Upload this final version, rather than an earlier file with a similar name.
- Read the receiving website’s preview or validation message before submitting the form.
On a shared computer, remove personal downloads when you finish and sign out of any accounts. Selecting a file in our tools does not upload it to our server, but your downloaded copy remains on the computer until you remove it.
